General description

Tetanus toxin is produced by Clostridium tetani. Composed of a 100 kDa heavy and a 50 kDa light chain joined by a single interchain disulfide bond.

Produced by the anaerobic bacillus Clostridium tetani, Tetanus toxin is one of the deadliest toxins known. Composed of two polypeptide chains joined by a single interchain disulfide bond. The heavy chain (~100 kDa) participates in binding to the nerve terminals, internalization, retrograde axonal transport, and membrane translocation of the light chain (~50 kDa) into the neuronal cytosol. The light chain inhibits neurotransmitter release after reduction of the disulfide bridge.
